Garden Time

Oh, look at this sweet little Dandelion patch. The burning question is: Are there dandelions growing in the asparagus patch or……..

070

are there asparagus growing in the dandelion patch? I’m not sure there is an answer to this question grasshopper.  I think we must weed our asparagus patch. Maybe just de-dandelion it.

071

The garden has been tilled twice.  These little green patches are actually herbs.  The brown patches are two chocolate labs who have not been properly contained out of the garden. I see an electric fence in the near future.

No, this is not a dandelion! This is Alex working in the garden.  We are trying to continue in the reuse mode.  These green ties are from our hay bales.  We have them in abundance. The wire fence panels are the left over ends from the lamb jugs we made in the barn.  We weren’t sure what we were going to do with them. They really came in handy here as a pea trellis.

079

We placed them between the posts and tied them to the existing wires to hold them in place. We planted peas which will climb the panels and grow nice and strong.  It too is an experiment. There are always variables. Only time will tell.  We should be safe planting peas.  There is always the chance of frost till June 1st.

Here is Ted mowing our huge patch of dandelions.  Oh what a shame.  If we ever find a market for these flowers we will be rich. For now…they just get mowed! Mow on Ted.

I know that many of you fellow bloggers are actually harvesting your gardens.  Here in Maine we have to take it slow. I don’t like to start seeds inside.  I tried it once and the cats thought it was salad fixin’s for them. Now we wait till the threat of frost is past and plant seeds and plants.  I will have to work on seed prep 101. Happy Gardening!

Much Love and Prayers from Mainely Ewes Farm and our land of dandelions. Kelly

Dandelion wine, Dandelion syrup and dandelion tea as a diuretic. Dandelion greens can be eaten before the blossoms appear. I mix them with other spring greens for a salad. Also the dandelion root when dried can make a coffee substitute.

Our goats consider dandelions the absolute Godiva chocolates of goat food. Also feed them to the chickens - trying to do the old "lemons into lemonade" thing with a pesky weed! Lots of work in that garden and woo hoo on re using things. When I look back on how my grandparents and great grands lived - it wasn't called recycling - it was called living.

In your spare time, sorry!, did up the dandelions and give the whole plant to your chickens. They will absolutely adore you and now you have a use for the dandelions!

I agree. Make some dandelion honey and tea... have a dandelion salad with the young leaves. The coffee isn't that good or at least not to me. Hope you have a wonderful gardening season!
